Why Website Speed Matters (and How to Compress Images the Right Way)

Images are usually the single biggest reason a webpage loads slowly. A few uncompressed 4-5MB photos from a modern phone camera can easily make a page take 10+ seconds to load on a mobile connection — and most visitors leave before that.

  1. Slow pages lose visitors — studies consistently show bounce rate rises sharply once load time passes 2-3 seconds.
  2. Speed is a Google ranking factor — Core Web Vitals (part of how Google ranks pages) directly measure loading speed, so a slow page can rank lower even with great content.
  3. You rarely need the original file size — a photo captured at 12+ megapixels is far larger than any web page will ever display it; resizing to a sensible max width (e.g. 1600px) before compressing usually cuts file size dramatically with no visible difference.
  4. Pick the right format — JPEG for photos, PNG only when you need transparency or sharp edges (like a logo/screenshot), and WebP when you want the smallest file size at good quality.
  5. Always preview before publishing — compression is a trade-off; check the compressed version actually still looks good at the sizes it'll be displayed at.

Compress and resize a photo for free with our Image Compressor — everything happens locally in your browser, so your original photo is never uploaded anywhere.
